Symphonic Winds
One of the great things about the University of Houston is its diversity. Diversity of people, their backgrounds, and their aspirations. This is clearly reflected in the wide number of degree areas sought here. One seemingly hidden area of excellence on campus is in the talents brought to life in the Moores Opera House, where tonight a stellar performance of music that would challenge and surprise you was enthusiastically presented. The range of performances pushed the limit, going from powerful opera, to the intriguing resonance of a flute and oboe in contrast as part of a quintet, to a premier performance of a composition from UH's own Kevin Richardson. But for me the moment of the night rose along a crescendo to the pinnacle during the performance of a piece from Karel Husa. The piece was a beautiful array of percussion, piccolo, and horns that balanced congruency and discord. The student body of the University of Houston should not miss the opportunity of adding diversity and balance to their own experience here by come out to the performances of the School of Music. I know that this had been an enriching experience for me.
